These days it's a much more tricky prospect, what to buy for the person at the office who is retiring. In the old days it was a simple choice, a gold mantelpiece clock and the job was done. But is a carriage clock still an acceptable gift as we arrive in 2010?

Well we think a clock is still definitely a good choice, but it doesn't have to be a boring choice any more - the gift you give says as much about you as the giver as it does about the recipient. We've put together a list of what we think are great choices for those looking forward to lying in after 8.30am, hanging around in their dressing gown until after 10am and generally spending the time doing what they like, because they've earned it.

The clock choice - still a classic and safe bet, but for something a bit special why not try a 24ct gold golf buggy clock - for those retiring that you know will be looking to play the odd round of golf or two - the 24ct gold plating makes it a quality gift too and will look great on any mantle piece or home office desk.

A electric guitar on metal stand, in chrome. Retirement is the perfect time to pick up a new hobby and many people learn to play an instrument when they finally have the time.

24ct two tone racing bike clock - if they are planning on hitting the road and reclaiming their youth, then this clock will be a great celebration of that.

The classic choice is still a French design carriage clock, we like the David Peterson, Anglais 8 day mechanical carriage clock. It has a lovely solid brass movement but comes with 24ct gold plated and on a shock protection platform, so the quality is outstanding.
